Speech for xxxx

Today, I'd like to talk about a book, 'THE CATCHER IN THE RYE', written by Jerome David Salinger. I'm reading it now but I'll quote a few lines that impressed me.

...(Old Spencer said) "Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules."
(Holden said) "Yes, sir. I know it is. I know it."
Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game all right---I'll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren't any hot-shots, then what's a game about it? Nothing. No game....

I don't know what Salinger would mean, but I think these lines mean the mentality of successful persons in society.

A successful person want to say he has been trying to do many things by himself and that an unsuccessful person has not. So he says the life is game, in order to make unsuccessful one understand this fact he believes unconsciously. That means " You are not trying to adapt yourself to the rules of society, so that you are unsuccessful." A winner is likely to emphasize his efforts rather than a coincidence, though his success may have nothing to do with his efforts. Sometime, a winner's logic lacks the consideration of individual circumstances. To make people on the other side participate in the game is not a kindness but a nuisance.

Life may be a game for some people, but a game is not life for all.

虫のスピーチもやりましたね。短いけど。

I'd like to talk to you about two kinds of insects. One is a firefly and the other is a mosquito. You know, a firefly is a flying insect with a tail that shines in the dark, and a mosquito is also a flying insect usually in the dark but bites humans and animals and sucks their blood.

I often see a lot of fireflies floating and glowing in the air on the way of taking a walk with my dog at night. That's a fantastic view and I feel very good. At the same time, I feel very itchy. A mosquito bites me when I stop to watch fireflies in fascination. So These two kinds of insects make me relaxed and irritated at the same time. What an unreasonable combination that is!

Do you think so?

これ最初に行った時の自己紹介

My speech on May the 23rd at English Circle xxxxx.(draft)

I'd like to talk about something to introduce myself to you.

I'm xxxxx xxxxx.
I had been in Tokyo for some years before I returned to my hometown xxxxx in April this year. I worked and studied at university in Tokyo as a temporary worker and as a student. I had three tasks there, so to say.

The first task was to teach students (especially freshmen) basic skills of computer literacy, for example, "How can we efficiently search the Web for the information we want to get?" or "How can we effectively use some pieces of information we've got, in terms of thinking more deeply of the subject on which each of us decided to write a paper(an essay) in advance?"

The second task was to engage in a research project which need a help. Projects were various, such as designing the architecture of my university's network system, practically making the search engine of a particular field of sciences and so on. What project I should participate in depended upon the situation of my university or my professor at that time. But to tell the truth, all the situation meant was that we had to make the project meet the deadline.

The third task was to study law and political science because I was also an undergraduate (a student) in the Department of Law. I graduated in March this year.

I think these three tasks were good experience to me. Maybe University is a convenient place where we can work and study at the same time.

By the way, have you ever got on a train in Tokyo? How did you feel? That's a nightmare! Do you think so? I've got a phobia about crowded trains (but it's not so serious). Now I'm very pleased to be free from those terribly crowded trains running across Tokyo. xxxxx is a great place because it doesn't even have any stations, though xxxxx and xxxxx have.

Finally, please let me talk a little about something else. It's about my dream, my present situation and of course English.

I'd like to work as a public prosecuter or a lawyer in the future, so I'm trying to get the license while working as an office worker during the day and as a private teacher at night for students in xxxx area for the time being. Of course, I sometimes teach them English, but I'm not confident about my English because I've never been abroad. I feel I need to improve my poor English, at least to some degree.

So I'm very delighted to be here to participate in this English Circle.
Thank you very much for giving me a good chance to learn English.
Thanks for your kind attention.
